Mitsubishi Evolution II Hillclimber

Pleasure Evo Hillclimber:

This car began life as a street car, purchased from a fellow hillclimber in stock form, with a broken transfer case. After making it road worthy I began taking it to track days. It was such a joy to drive in stock form. Over many years of development it went from stock to a time trial and track car to a caged hillclimber and time attack racer. The evo debuted at Redline Time attack’s very first event at BeavRun in PA. The car was transported in the back of our large box truck and midway through the long trip, it had shifted and pressed against the rear door of the truck in such a way that I couldn’t open it upon arrival. I had to park on a steep downhill to jostle it back into the middle of the truck bay.

Over coming years, The car proved to be competitive against cars 3-4 times the cost. Development was not linear and hard lessons were learned. For a period of time, the car suffered from poor quality engineering (my own) and poor quality parts (my own budget). This was during the seductive initial influx of cheap parts from China, especially manifolds which were a non-stop source of problems. I tried too hard to fit very wide tires (275 at the widest) which I will never do again. Before the dogbox, third gear failed twice at the track. The standard 7 bolt block crankwalked and was replaced with a 6 bolt Galant block. I used both 1g and 2g heads on the car. It also had several different cooling package configurations on it. The car existed at a strange time in car modifying. There wasn’t good small production manufacturing like there is today and because of that, turbo systems and cooling systems were hard to come by. Today’s landscape is so much better. There are many options of quality, durable manifolds and engineered parts that would have saved me so much time and money trying to do it myself.
